Mother Bear Project, knitting for a cause

The Mother Bear Project is dedicated to providing comfort and hope to children affected by HIV/AIDS in emerging nations, by giving them a gift of love in the form of a knitted or crocheted bear.

A group of Temple Israel Sisterhood members, under the direction of Jenny Baer, began knitting bears for the Mother Bear Project in 2005 and as of May 2017 have sent 2,442 bears to children like the ones pictured below. Mother Bear knitters come from all over the United States and around the world to participate in this project.

From one simple pattern, truly unique bears are created, reflecting the individuality of the knitter who created it. Each bear wears a tag with the knitter's name and the bears are treasured possessions of these young children.

Sisterhood members also knit for other causes including MIFA, Manna House, West Cancer Center and Memphis Jewish Home.

This group meets in the conference room at Temple every Thursday afternoon at 1:30 PM.
